Prevention & Gum Care

Myers Family DentistryHere at Myers Family Dentistry, we are dedicated to the prevention and treatment of gum disease.

Gum disease means your gums (the tissue surrounding your teeth) are infected. It is the biggest reason that people lose their teeth.

Gum disease starts out because plaque and bacteria build up on your teeth. You can remove most plaque and bacteria with routine brushing and flossing, though you need to see your dentist regularly to have your teeth professionally cleaned. We will even clean underneath your gums and other hard to reach spots!

Some symptoms of gum disease include bleeding when you brush your teeth, red and swollen gums, or gums that seem to be pulling away from your teeth. You may also have really bad breath, no matter how much you brush and rinse with mouthwash. As the disease progresses, you may even start to lose your teeth.

People who don’t take good care of their teeth are more prone to the disease. Those who smoke or chew tobacco are also more likely to have gum disease. There are some diseases, conditions, and medications that can increase your risk. Pregnant women are more likely to get the disease. People who have diabetes are also as risk. These people should see their dentist more often.

Gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease, can be eliminated by a thorough dental cleaning and proper dental care following the cleaning. If gingivitis is not treated, it turns into periodontitis (advanced gum disease). As the disease continues to worsen, it can lead to irreversible loss of the tissue and bone that support your teeth.

It is amazing how many adults this disease affects. Almost half of adults over thirty have various forms of gum disease, which is amazing because people don’t realize how important good dental care is.
